Our 3x App Growth Methodology

The 3x App Growth Methodology is a series of tactics, strategies and optimisations that reduce friction, increase learning, and provide a shed tonne more scale than you could probably handle alone.

Here are the four main principles of the methodology...

1. Avoid attracting and acquiring low-impact users

The secret ingredient in the sauce that is attracting the right people to your app is to appeal to their pains and tell them about your solution. This messaging needs to be consistent through the top of your funnel from ads, to the app stores, and through to the initial messaging users receive once they are in the app.
When this messaging is broken, unclear, and has little meaning to the user then this is where the trouble starts to happen.

2. Automate your engagement to boost your KPIs and growth

Actually speaking with your users is one of the most powerful things you can do. We don't mean talking with them face to face every day because that would be ludicrous, but showing the user there is additional value in your app is critical.
Implementing push notifications, in-app messages, email and SMS in the RIGHT way is an important step in being able to engage your users, activate them and monetise them.

3. Learn and understand who your users are and what they do 24/7

This is a screenshot of a FinTech app client of ours. The work we did was aiming to make the app more attractive to the target audience and therefore reduce the ad costs. 
The result was that the cost per install dropped by 87% meaning more high-impact users could be acquired for less.

The Problems...

This particular client had not done very little Facebook acquisition in the past and was in need of growing their user base and active account holders.

The conversion rates from ad to app store to download was low and therefore their descriptions and app previews were not clear enough. The value proposition was weak and people didn't know what they were getting themselves into.

They did not know what was going to attract users in to the app and engage them.

Our Solution...

We set about implementing an app acquisition campaign that would attract people in and keep them sticking around.

The client did not have a robust enough tracking solution in the app at this point so we also helped them implement a tool to help us see user churn and conversion rates that would inform our strategy.

Using striking and engaging imagery we would help them grow 7% week-on-week.

Our data and tracking experts identified that the client was not collecting enough information to fully understand the behaviour of their users and how that translated into product analysis. This opened up a large opportunity for the client to engage their customers more clearly and make changes to the product that would boost engagement & activation.

The Results...

These figures are from earlier on in the engagement but we can see how our work managed to decrease the average cost per registration by 79% from the highest peak to the average over time.
Our client was not engaging their users until we started the campaigns at the end of July 2020. Just by using some basic engagement tactics, keeping users up to date with new offers happening in the app, and applying a simple yet effective form of personalisation we were able to bring more users back to the app who would have otherwise churned and dropped off completely.

The client was experiencing a rapid decline in retention before identifying that engagement was a top priority that lead to a 50% increase in retention.

From the moment we started engaging users on a regular basis the engagement shot up month on month.
This screenshot shows the number of in-app engagements happening in the app from users who were sent a push notification (some were followed up by an in-app message).

This does not include any email marketing yet the result was a 2,261% increase in engagement from the beginning of July to the end of October.

The Problems...

With a limited budget and very little in the way of an acquisition strategy, My Rent Rewards wanted to scale but did not have the resource or expertise to successfully pull it off.

The business had very little information about what their users were doing in the app and this lead to an uncertainty around how to grow the business.

To add to the difficulty, they also wanted to increase their revenue. The typical thought process they had was that they needed more users (more downloads, more registrations) in the app to achieve this.

There was no engagement strategy and no plan of action to scale revenue as the number of app users grew.
